Description
Protopasta's Brass Composite HTPLA is a brass-filled PLA filament that can be printed like plastic but is processed like real metal. The material, which looks like metal, is coated with real brass powder and can be processed in many different ways. Print shiny coins with a high-gloss finish or opt for a natural, rustic finish that resembles an aged brass sculpture.
⇒ For best printing results, Protopasta recommends using a 0.6mm nozzle and a printing temperature of 210-230°C. Nevertheless, the composite filaments can also be easily printed with a 0.4 mm nozzle. A heated bed is not required.
Common finishing techniques for metal composite filaments:
► Heat treatment so that the 3D prints survive high temperatures, the sun or warm polishing pads,
► Processing with a wire brush for later oxidation or a bright, satin finish,
► Stone grinding with steel grit for a darker but smooth, shiny look,
► Partial painting to fill recesses with a contrasting colour,
► Polishing with a rotary tool, cotton buff and polishing paste for a bright, reflective surface,
► Polishing with paper for a clean, smooth and shiny surface with less darkening.
► Oxidation of exposed metal naturally or accelerated with a 50/50 vinegar/hydrogen peroxide mixture saturated with salt. Storing the printed part in a sealed plastic bag will retain moisture; Heat further accelerates the reaction.
⇒ Prior heat treatment of the material ensures that parts printed with it retain their shape up to their melting point at approx. 175 °C.
⇒ The material does not contain enough brass, which would make it electrically conductive, sintered or plated.
Tip: Once you have achieved the desired finish, solidify it with a coat of clear varnish or a brush-applied water-based, food-safe and dishwasher-safe varnish.
